Caribbean Derived

Camella’s Kitchen is an award-winning specialty food shop that was founded by Karen and Nyana, a mother and daughter duo hailing from Trinidad and Tobago. Proudly based in Prince George’s County, Maryland, we are bringing the bold flavors of the Caribbean to the Washington, DC metro area and beyond. We sell gourmet hot sauces, marinades, cakes and more. Rooted in tradition, our flavors are all-natural and contain no artificial preservatives or colors. Our unique flavors are made in small batches, and are crafted to ensure quality.

Karen has decades of experience making Caribbean delicacies, having learned her trade from her mother, the lovely Ms. Camella. Karen also received a food certification while living in Trinidad. Nyana similarly learned her trade from Karen, and with her love of cooking and passion for Caribbean culture, is continuing the legacy of Ms. Camella.

We are all about community at Camella’s Kitchen. We try to source locally as much as we can, because not only do we get fresher ingredients, but we also support our local farmers as well. Many of the places that we source from are small Black-owned farms. By purchasing from us, you are contributing to making our communities more sustainable, and are helping to further the green economy in the DC metro area. Furthermore, it is our hope that through Camella’s Kitchen, you learn how to use the everyday Caribbean flavors we grew up with to make tastier, and healthier meals at home. As a bonus, our travel size flavors can easily be enjoyed on-the-go. To help with this goal, we bring you recipes that you can try. Let us help you to live your best life and #BeCamellaSaucy!

Background

Camella’s Kitchen was named in memory of Ms. Camella, the mother and grandmother of the founders. Ms. Camella sold delectable homemade goods in her local hometown market in Trinidad. Whenever she was not at the market, you could find her cooking in her kitchen, making food and other delicacies to feed her family and anyone who stopped by her home. Her kitchen was a welcoming space and so we take inspiration from the awe-inspiring Ms. Camella. Our kitchen is a reflection of Ms. Camella’s kitchen, and we will use it to create and share our local Caribbean delights with the world.

Listen to this episode from Magic At The Margins on Spotify. Food is powerful. It brings us together, teaches us about culture, tells historical tales, and serves as the focal point for so much of our social lives. Karen and Nyana, the mother-daughter duo, co-owners, and founders of Camella's Kitchen understand this power.
